HETCH HETCHY TRAIL

We hiked Hetch Hetchy in late May 2006. Hetch Hetchy is located within Yosemite National Park, off California HWY 120. Once a beautiful valley, it is now artificially flooded, and rests under a man made lake 300 feet deep. This lake constitutes the water supply of the city of San Francisco. In 1913 a decision was made to dam the Tuolumne River, after furious fights led by John Muir and the Sierra Club. Unfortunately John Muir lost the fight and died a year later.

Even 'though Hetchy Hetchy may no longer be the gorgeous place it used to be, its still beautiful. Hiking in spring will show several waterfalls, including the Wapama Falls which was our destination.

Perhaps you'd like to join the fight to restore Hetch Hetchy!
