Poppies on Hite Cove Trail near Yosemite NP, California
California Hiker Yosemite Photographer:
Hite’s Cove Trail is 4 ˝ miles long one way, and hugs the canyon of the Merced River. From about mid March to mid April it is one of the best wildflower walks in the state of California, boasting 60 different varieties of wildflowers. While all of these flowers are stunning, none shine as brightly and bloom as profusely as the California Poppies, California’s State Flower.
There are ups and down on this trail, you may walk high on the cliffs of the canyon, and as low as the banks of the river. If you’re not up to walking 9 miles total: The most spectacular section of wildflower viewing happens during the first 2 miles. Even if you can walk in as little as half a mile, you will still be happy you did! It’s really that gorgeous!
Driving directions from Merced (HWY 99): Take HWY140 East toward Yosemite. Hite’s Cove Trail starts at Savage’s Trading Post near the Merced River Bridge, about 15 miles East of Midpines (A few miles before getting to Yosemite Park).
2 seperate hikes to Hite's Cove are pictured here. 2001 is awesome= trail photos and lots of poppies. 2002 photos are of gorgeous wildflowers only. Start here:
